Abstract

One of the best privileges of AMMC was that its physical, mechanical and wear characteristics can be tailor-made by the suitable picking of its alloy and reinforcement to meet the demand as required in the industry from time to time. The present study was based on the application of waste fly ash from industries, in a useful approach, by adding it to the AA6082 aluminum metal matrix utilizing a liquid metallurgy route. For this purpose, the fly ash powder (0.1µm to 100 µm) was used as reinforcement with varying compositions with AA6082. The microstructure of AMMC was studied by using an optical microscope for modifying compositions of fly-ash particles. The mechanical properties like hardness and the tribological properties such as wear resistance and coefficient of friction of the aluminum metal matrix were analyzed with the varying percentages of the weight of fly ash reinforcements in composites in the as-cast condition. Further through SEM, the different wear mechanisms are analyzed.
