Abstract
The article presents material on the personal book collection of Professor B. V. Varneke as a historical source in the study of his biography. General information on individual editions of the library and their role in understanding the importance of preserving cultural heritage and transmitting traditions for the harmonious development of cultural heritage are presented. Bibliological and bibliographic study of the scientist's library publications allows to identify and introduce into scientific circulation new sources of information, to present informationon the provenances found on individual copies. B. V. Varneke's personal book collection reflects his various reading, creative and scientific interests, reproduces his communicative connections with the academic community. The inscripts found in the book collection of B. V. Varneke are a fact of culture that characterizes the scientific and social life of the late XIX – early XX century. Inscriptsprovide an opportunity to trace certain scientific traditions in the development of the humanities in the early twentieth century and contribute to the understanding of social and personal relations between scientists, the priorities of their research, etc. The professor's personal library serves as an indicator of his scientific interests, including a selection of printed publications that testify to the scrupulousand indepth study of many issues in various fields of humanities. B. V. Varneke book collection is very valuable for specialists in various humanities, is an interesting material for research in various fields of humanities. The use of private libraries as historical sources of biographical research of their owners is importantin terms of their critical analysis, which involves identifying, selecting, classifyingpublications, forming their complexes, attribution, establishing the time and placeof their acquisition, motives, textual and hermeneutic study of provenances onthe pages of publications, comparison, identification of their objective value fora specific biographical study.
