ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON TEACHERS’ JOB PERFORMANCE AND RETENTION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTH-EAST, NIGERIA

Abstract
The study assessed the impact of staff training and development on teachers' job performance and retention among secondary schools in South-East, Nigeria. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were adopted for the study. Descriptive survey design was employed for the study. The population of the study comprised 25,976 teachers drawn from 1,908 secondary schools in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States, Nigeria. The study sampled 2,600 teachers from 113 schools through stratified random sampling using multistage cluster sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire developed by the researchers titled: “Staff Training and Development on Teachers Performance and Retention Questionnaire (STDTPRQ)”. The instrument was validated by three experts from the Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient Statistics was used to obtain a reliability index of 0.84. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study revealed that implementation of personnel policy of training and development enhance teachers' job performance on the job and also significantly contributed to teacher retention among secondary schools in South East, Nigeria. Based on the finding, it was recommended among others that government across levels should provide necessary environment for regular and periodic training and retraining of teachers for job productivity and retention among others.
