Abstract
The theoretical essence of finance as an economic category has been substantiated. It is shown that the stages of evolutionary development were characterized by a certain ratio of areas of economic and financial sciences, the formation of a conceptual basis for scientific research and practical recommendations development, consistent changes in scientific paradigms and trends. The defining criteria and concepts features in the field, the opinions of leading representatives at each stage of scientific development are investigated. The evolution of finance category in the context of various economics schools is investigated.
