From Tulu to English: Representations of Tuluva culture in D.K Chowta’s Mittabail Yamunakka: A Tale of a Landlord’s Household

Abstract

Culture is one of the important traits of one's identity. The representations of culture in literature open several portals. One of them is the exploration of a multi ethnic community represented in the work. Translation is one of the important tool for these aspect Minor language literatures are seldom translated. This paper proposes to discuss the aspects of Tuluva culture represented in the English translation of DK Chowta's Mittabail Yamunakka a Tale of a Landlord's Household. The novel is published in 2017 byAkkritiAshaya Publications, Mangalore. The novel is rich with thick description of Tuluva culture. According to the late scholar Gururaj Bhat, Yakshagana, Bootharadhane, Nagaradhane, Tulu tongue and Aliyakattu are the important traits of Tuluva People. This paper is trying to explore the scopes of these socio cultural traits in the novel.
