Abstract

Introduction. Importance of work is determined by clarification of the sodium hyaluronate effect on the pathochemical anterior eye tissue changes of animals treated with the instillation of preservative benzalkonium chloride (BAC). Purpose. To study the effect of hyaluronate on the pathochemical indicators in the tissues of the anterior eye after application of the preservative benzalkonium chloride. Methods. 22 rabbits were used for the experiment. All laboratory animals were divided into 2 groups: Group 1 ? a control group (12 animals), the animals received the instillation of BAC, Group 2 ? an experimental one (10 animals), the animals received the instillation of BAC and sodium hyaluronate. The activity of cytoplasmic, mitochondrial and lysosomal enzymes as well as reduced and oxidized glutathione were determined in the extracts obtained from the cornea, conjunctiva homogenates and lacrimal fluid. Results. It was possible to weaken the negative effect of preservative BAC eye drops on the metabolic processes in the tissues of the anterior eye with hyaluronate. En?zyme activity was reduced under the influence of BAC, and the use of sodium hy-aluronate instillation restored enzyme activity: lactate dehydrogenase ? 24.9 %, glucose-6phosphate dehydrogenase ? 22.1 %, malate dehydrogenase ? 23.9 %,glutamate dehydrogenase - 23.5 %, succinate dehydrogenase - 20.5 %, cyto-chrome oxidase - 27.3 %. Conclusions. Sodium hyaluronate significantly prevents the breakdown of enzy- matic activity caused by the preservative BAC in the tissues of the anterior eye.
