Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of the paper is to build a long-term forecast of natural hydrodynamic regime using GIS approach and a universal prediction algorithm for exogenous processes; to modernize the existing and develop new methods and technical means to obtain general hydrogeological characteristics. Design/methodology/approach. We used the method of mathematical modeling to calculate the performance of groundwater. Findings. It was established that the main role in the formation of water exchange in the system of aquifers and groundwater resources processes played by a vertical relationship of aquifers through low permeable rock layers. Identification of these patterns of water exchange in hydrogeological structures made it possible for the first time to perform zoning of Ukraine in terms of water exchange, and to estimate water exchange rates of groundwater aquifer systems with surface waters, which is one of the indicators of protection from external contamination. Combination of the proposed techniques made it possible to implement distributed assessment of natural groundwater resources and underground runoff in some regions of Ukraine. Practical value/implications. The results of the hydrogeological monitoring are the input data for modeling and prediction of spatial and temporal trends of underground hydrosphere, which is demonstrated by the long-term forecast of regional variability of groundwater levels for the Zhytomyr region. The research results are the basis for building a geoinformation system to forecast modes of groundwater levels, and its application to other areas, based on the proposed research methodology.
