Abstract

Islamophobia, in its broadest sense, is defined as irrational fear and hatred of the religion of Islam and Muslim people. The most prominent issues as to the definition of the concept of Islamophobia are about its similarities to or differences from the concepts of racism and anti-Semitism. Islamophobia can be defined as a new form of racism that includes discrimination against a religious community. Although Islamophobia manifests itself in Western societies as a form of cultural racism, it is thought that considering its economic roots is critical in both defining Islamophobia and understanding what kind of phenomenon it is. In this respect, the study investigates the economic origins of Islamophobia by focusing on the differences between Islamophobia in the USA and Europe. The study attempts to present a current affairs by conducting a literature review. The study also discusses whether the United States' foreign policy based on the “war on terror” rhetoric pursued in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks served to internationalize and globalize the phenomenon of Islamophobia. It is argued that in the context of European Islamophobia, the impact of economic dynamics is more prominent, while the US Islamophobia is positioned more on the political base, and the concern for maintaining existing hegemonic power in the international system is decisive.
