From the Correspondence of the Lubny Colonel Maksym Illyashenko with Colonel Illya Novytsky (1676–1689)

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to present an essay on the biography of Lubny Colonel Maksym Illyashenko on the basis of mostly archival sources and to publish his correspondence with the colonel Illya Novytsky. The methodological basis of the study are the principles of historicism and objectivity. Both general and special historical methods, primarily historical-descriptive, historical-chronological were used in the article. Scientifi c novelty. Since the article is based mainly on archival unpublished sources, which are part of a unique six-volume archive of the late 17th century of Colonel Illya Novytsky (stored in the fond II of the Institute of Manuscripts of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine), many original facts from the biography of M. Illyashenko, his contacts with I. Novytsky, the organization of winter apartments for hireds soldiers in the Lubny Regiment are given for the fi rst time. The full publication of Illyashenko's correspondence with Novytsky has been submitted. Conclusions. M. Illyashenko's relations with I. Novytsky providing hireds soldiers with winter apartments and provisions were revealed. The most complete biographical sketch of Illyashenko's biography is also given, the picture of the organization of frontier service in the Left Bank Hetmanate and struggle against attacks of hordes was specifi ed. Prospects for the study: this article allows us signifi cantly supplement the biography of Colonel Maksym Illyashenko, which is very important given the research of the life of the entire offi cers of the Hetmanate of the Ruin. An important step is being taken in the publication of archival material, as currently the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Source Studies is preparing to publish the entire archive of Novytsky.
