Abstract
Nowadays, there is a significant evolution of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) due to increasing hardware performance and software engineering technology. GIS are very helpful in planning, data analysis and decision making. GIS defined as “computing application capable of creating, storing, manipulating, visualizing and analyzing geographic information” [1]. GIS handles many formats of information, so it requires an appropriate development approach to achieve its goals. The GIS team must choose the best development methodologies depending on the nature of the project and the team's resources and customer's needs. This paper focuses on some of the agile system development methodologies: extreme programming, Scrum, Dynamic systems development methodology (DSDM) and Kanban, and it outlines in detail the phases of these methodologies. This paper evaluates methodologies for developing GIS, we will provide an evaluation of the performance of the most commonly used methods with GIS development by analyzing and discussing their main advantages and disadvantages.
