Abstract

‘Anya Yug Anya Purush' is Debendranath Acharya's first novel. This is the first novel of him lead to the author on the way for his establishment and fame in the Assamese literary world. This is a completely social novel. The novel depicts the life process, traditions, values, beliefs and reforms of a village society which is considered to be lost in pre-independence Assam. One of the notable features of the novel is its language style. The central character of the novel Beng Belestar has given a unique look to the language of the novel by his folk language. The interesting part of the novel is the folknames of people and behind the stories of those names. A name used in common parlance as opposed to an official name is simply called folkname. Folknames carry the identity of a person or a particular object. Different context between different folknames prevalent in the lake society is involved. There are so many folknames reflected in Debendranath Acharya's novel 'Anya Yug Anya Purush' which has different contexts behind those names. The present study analysis the folknames and behind their social context reflected in the novel.
