Abstract
This paper examines emerging high-speed electrical machine technology by surveying a variety of topologies designed and installed in industry and academia for a variety of applications. The effect of advancements in materials and parts, such as electrical steels and copper alloys, on the machines' working physical limits is studied. To help grasp the standard efficiency criteria, the core application fields driving the production of high-speed machines are also examined. High-speed electric machines (HSEMs) are becoming increasingly common in many applications today, and they are gaining traction in the automotive industry. HSEMs, on the other hand, face a number of unique architecture problems. The aim of this paper is to outline and address major HSEM problems and design considerations. The paper also has suggestions for overcoming these obstacles. The four main loss components of HSEMs are addressed, as well as the strategies for reducing each loss component. HSEM bearing alternatives are also contrasted. Furthermore, the rotor dynamics and technical problems are thoroughly explored, supplemented by design recommendations and considerations. An summary of the thermal and cooling problems is given. Finally, the problems of power electronics circuitry are shown, with several proposed ideas following. As a result, this paper serves as a reference for selecting appropriate techniques and designing HSEMs and related accessories.
