Abstract

Present time is the era of fast food, irregularity in food timing, changing food habits, sedentary life & increased stress. All these factors disturb the digestive system, resulting into many diseases. Among them, one important group is Anorectal diseases such as Fissure In Ano, Internal Haemorrhoids, Externointernal Haemorrhoids. Ayurveda plays very important role in management of ano-rectal diseases. Aacharya Sushruta had given four lines of treatment namely aushadha, kshar, agni & shastrakarma in the treatment of arsha (piles). [1] Out of these, shastrakarma is one of the important ways to treat the ano-rectal diseases. In post operative management on withdrawal of anaesthesia, patients have to face the problem of ano rectal pain, bleeding per rectum, local burning & itching as a result of anal stretching, sclerosant injection, ligation etc. Apart from parenteral route of analgesic drugs, administration of locally acting drug is needed to be used. Rectal drug administration could represent a convenient, alternative route of drug administration over oral route which has its own drawbacks like intolerance, nausea, vomiting or gastric pain. In modern medicine, diclofenac sodium (as it is an analgesic) [5, 7] suppository is used mostly to overcome such problems in spite of its adverse reactions like rhino sinusitis, angioedema, urticaria, hyperkalemia, edema etc. To overcome these side effects, an ayurvedic suppository “polyherbal gudavatika” was prepared by correlating Aacharya charaka’s Mahakashaya Gana [3] & Aacharya Sushrut’s Mishrak Gana. [6] Drugs which are common to both & having multiple properties along with analgesic & anti-inflammatory properties, such drugs are taken in this study. Thus significant result was found in patients of post operative ano-rectal complaints by using polyherbal gudavatika.
