Abstract

In current era Acne Vulgaris is one of the most burning problems. It has been found that adolescence are mostly susceptible to Acne vulgaris. In Ayurveda it is termed as Mukhadushika. In ayurveda mukhadushika is described under the heading of Ksudrarogas.The shalmali thron like eruption on the face due to vitiation of kapha,vata and rakta which are found on the face of adolescent are called as mukhadushika or yauvan pidika. All the samhitas have pointed out kapha, vata,and rakta as the causative factor of the disease. In sharangadhara samhita vakrasnigdhata and pidika have been mentioned as due to shukradhatumala while Bhavaprakasa mentioned due to svabhava. In ayurveda for the treatment of mukhadushika (kshudraroga) mainly two type of chikitsa are described i.e. Shodhana chikitsa and Shamana chikitsa. As described by various Acharyas the shodhana chikitsa includes Vamana,Nasya and Shiravedha. The shamana chikitsa includes various type of lepa and pralepa. Modern text described Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disorder of sebaceous follicles characterized by the formation of comedone, papules and pastules , less frequently nodules or cysts. The treatment part includes, First line treatment for all form of acne are topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide. Moderate acne often requires systemic antibiotics. Severe acne should be treated with oral isotretinoin. Therefore this review article attempt to explain the Mukhadushika in detail as mentioned in Ayurvedic and modern literatures.
