Darülfünun was founded in Ottoman period as a Western style. In 1933, Turkish Government reorganised the Darülfünun and named Istanbul University. After the Second World War, Republic People Party's administration gave the autonomy to universities. But, Republic People Party continued to practice against the autonomy and leftist professors had been expelled from the university. In 1950-1953, Democrat Party's relation was very good with universities. However, between 1953-1960, Democrat Party put pressure on university and took same professors from the university and appointed as a official. Thereupon, universities supported 27 May Military Administration. But this time, 147 professors were expelled from universities by military rulers.
