"Transport" idioms as a phraseological unit in english

This article considers an attempt to update the concept of «idiom» in English, provides a classification of species and main functions of idiom. The review of literary sources on the studied problem allowed substantiating the relevance of the work, determining the purpose and objectives of the study. The research methodology is based on general scientific methods of description, comparison, classification and interpretation. Special attention is paid to «transport» idioms and peculiarities of their use in modern English. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the detailed classification of idioms by mode of transport presented in the table, as well as examples of the origin of some idioms. The theoretical basis for the study was the work of foreign and domestic scientists in the theory of idiomatic and component analysis of idioms. The obtained results allow to prove inconsistency of origin and values idiom, which do not correspond to rules of grammar and logic. The likelihood of misinterpretation and misunderstanding in communication is reduced. The role of language is constantly increasing, as it is a key tool for successful intercultural communication. Mastering foreign language is impossible without studying the cultural, historical, social component for effective interaction. Despite the thematic «transport» classification of idioms, it can be argued that the application of these idioms is possible in a wide range of fields. The results of the research can be useful in the theory and practice of learning English, enriching speech, making it more interesting and expressive, for the compilation of thematic phraseological dictionaries, including transport topics, as well as for the preparation of scientific reports, articles, course and qualification works.
