Abstract

The present study is based on scholarly communication referred by the researcher in 20 PhD theses of Electric Engineering Department submitted to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat during 2012-2018. The main aim of this study was to determine the use of scholarly communication made by the research scholars of the Institute. A total number of 2524 citations were found in these 20 PhD theses, and they are from different document types. The analysis shows that the journals were the most preferred type of scholarly communication referred by the research scholars in the field of electrical engineering. The scholars cited journals 1724 times (68.3%), followed by conference proceedings with 439 times (17.39 %) citations. IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, a specialised journal published by IEEE, USA, scores the highest number of times cited. This journal is cited 205 times with a percentage (11.9%). International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems, published by Elsevier, UK, is second in the rank being cited 151 times (8.77%). The authorship pattern for journals cited shows that 252 journals (14.16%) are single-authored, 586 journals (33.99%) are a collaboration of two authors and 529 journals (30.68%) are authored by three authors.
