Mutual understanding in parent-child relationships and academic success of students: analysis of foreign research

Abstract

The article examines the concept of "mutual understanding in parent-child relationships" as a condition and mechanism for maintaining the child's safety and supporting the academic success of a schoolchild, which is especially important in the conditions of a child's education during wartime. Based on the interpretation of the basic concepts of research ("communication", "mutual understanding" and "academic success" of children at school), the importance of careful attitude of researchers to terminology, which creates the coordinates of the localization of the research field, is asserted. The article analyzes the achievements of selected 25 articles published in scientific journals of the psychological profile, which were collected on the basis of Internet search engines. The main research lines of statistically significant interrelationships are highlighted: 1) between children's academic performance at school, the indicator of parents' involvement in children's lives, the amount and quality of communication between parents and children, and the volume of communication topics related to educational success and school life; 2) conditioning of the above-mentioned relationships by various moderators, which may include: family status of parents, their educational level, children's age and form of interpersonal contact; 3) peculiarities of interpretation of the child's self-esteem and his need for help from parents during schooling. Based on the analysis of foreign studies, the child's need for help during schooling is asserted as a sign of the learning process itself, and not as an indicator of probable failure. It is proven that the social environment (currently family) as well as the involvement of parents in children's education outlines the chances of forming a child's need to master deep levels of education, which under certain conditions can act as both limitations and opportunities. It was determined that in the study of children's academic success, foreign researchers distinguish three areas of its presentations: school, home and academic socialization.
