Abstract

Rehabilitation and physical therapy use VR/AR. Immersive technology aid recovery. This abstract reviews VR/AR rehabilitation systems. VR/AR rehabilitation systems are categorized by demographic, therapy, and technology. Motion tracking sensors in some systems enable real-time virtual patient engagement. Gesture recognition helps patients interact organically. Haptic feedback replicates virtual item touch and interaction. Patients rehab with gamified serious games. Therapeutic virtual worlds and simulations are possible. Biofeedback controls exercise reactions. Patient performance determines workout parameters in adaptive systems. Tele-rehabilitation uses telecommunications. VR/AR tasks improve cognition. Data analytics assesses patient growth and guides treatment. Hardware, immersion, interaction modalities, customization, and data analytics integration vary between systems. Some systems use motion capture, smartphones, and game consoles. Augmented reality headsets can enhance immersion. Hand gestures, vocal commands, and handheld controllers interact. Customization meets patient and therapeutic needs. Data analytics shows patient improvement, improving treatment. VR/AR rehabilitation has potential, but challenges remain. Standards, evidence-based efficacy, cost-effectiveness, user acceptance, and clinical workflow integration are essential. VR/AR rehabilitation should solve these concerns. VR/AR rehabilitation systems may improve therapy outcomes. Comparing systems helps academics and practitioners identify their strengths and weaknesses, improving VR/AR technology in rehabilitation and physical therapy
