Abstract
When friction and wear are major concerns in an engineering application, a wide variety of polymers and polymer composites are utilised. This article provides a comprehensive overview of polymer tribology, including its relevance, the distinctive design principles of polymer composites for low friction and wear under sliding against smooth metallic counterparts, and the complementary effects of nano-particles and traditional fillers and fibers for an optimal tribological performance. In the following chapter, "Special Developments of Tribo-Components," Modern additive manufacturing processes for frictional and wear-loaded polymer components, as well as the use and properties of high-temperature polymer coatings, are discussed, and new methods for achieving electrical conductivity in polymer bearings.
