Historical Development Of Ankara University Faculty Of Veterinary Medicine Animal Breeding And Health Sciences Specialization High School

Abstract

Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Breeding and Health Sciences Specialization School was established during the period of Dean Prof. Selahattin Gürtürk in 1965. In the Specialization School, which started its educational activities in 1968, postgraduate students were trained continuously for 14 years and contributed to the development of the veterinary medicine profession. After the Higher Education Law was enacted, postgraduate education was transferred to the newly opened Health Sciences Institutes with the restructuring in postgraduate education, and in this context, the functions of the Specialization High School were terminated in 1982 and the School was closed. In the study, the historical development of this School, which has become the first institution in Türkiye to provide postgraduate credit-based education in the field of veterinary medicine and which has historically become the only institution that provides specialization diplomas in the fields of veterinary medicine, is discussed. The main material of the study was the primary sources obtained from the AUVF Dean's Archive. Among these resources, there are original documents, diplomas, annual reports, guides, regulations, photographs, specialization and doctoral theses belonging to the institution. In addition, information was collected from personal archives were used. The study was supported by secondary sources such as books and periodicals. The structure of the study is organized under three headings as “establishment and structuring”, “education” and “closure”. The structuring of the school, the principals, board members and lecturers, the status of postgraduate education, course contents, specialization and doctorate education were determined, and the names and thesis information of 153 graduates of the School were obtained. The data obtained were written down in chronological order and evaluated within the methodology of history. As a result, it can be argued that with the information provided from the sources about the historical development of Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Animal Breeding and Health Sciences Specialization School, it contributed to the history of veterinary medicine in particular and to the history of the institution in general.
