Knowledge and Behavior Regarding the Disposal of Expired and Unused Medication in Jordan

Abstract
Introduction: Keeping medications after the first use is very important issue as the reuse of these medications can cause harm. Proper discarding ways of the medications is important to the environment and to other human beings. Objective: This aim of this study is to assess the knowledge and behavior of Jordanian population about the proper reuse and disposal of medications. Methods: An online questionnaire comprising of 18 questions based on demographics, knowledge, beliefs, practices and concerns were utilized in this study. Results: 58.3% of the participant discard the tablets as its in the household garbage, 69.3% of the participant throw the liquid medication in the garbage as they. Regarding the knowledge about the expiry date of medication after opening most of the participant knew the right time about discarding the already used medications. Conclusion: Most study participants put unused and expired medications in household waste and toilets/sinks. This is contrary to the recommendations of national and international guidelines and guidelines for the safe and proper disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
