Abstract

Renowned Indo-Canadian author, Rohinton Mistry, has left an enduring literary legacy through his art of compassion, delving into the intricacies of human nature and society in his powerful novels. This research paper focuses on Mistry's profound exploration of compassion and its transformative impact on individuals and communities, analyzing his major works—"Such a Long Journey," "A Fine Balance," and "Family Matters."The paper commences with a literary overview of Mistry's career, tracing his journey from Bombay to Canada and highlighting the thematic richness evident in his novels. Utilizing a qualitative approach, the study explores the multidimensional concept of compassion in literature, emphasizing its ability to evoke empathy and forge emotional connections between characters and readers. The analysis of "Such a Long Journey" uncovers compassion's resilience amidst the political turmoil of 1970s India, illuminating key characters' compassionate acts and the influence of socio-political contexts on their actions. In "A Fine Balance," Mistry weaves a poignant narrative of human resilience and empathy amidst social hierarchies and political repression, emphasizing compassion as a bridge between diverse characters and provoking moral dilemmas and ethical decisions. In "Family Matters," the novel delves into familial complexities and cultural identity, showcasing compassion's transformative power in healing past wounds and fostering reconciliation. Mistry's portrayal of aging characters also emphasizes the importance of compassion in elder care, touching on contemporary societal challenges.Mistry's adept narrative style, particularly his third-person omniscient perspective, enables readers to intimately understand characters' emotional journeys, eliciting empathy.Furthermore, Mistry's works serve as a compassionate critique of prevailing political and economic systems, portraying compassion as a form of resistance against injustice and advocating for societal change.Overall, this research enhances our understanding of compassion in literature and its contemporary relevance, inspiring readers to reflect on their own capacity for empathy and compassion, fostering a more compassionate world.
