Abstract

Introduction. Doctoral student supervisors provide the necessary number of Candidate's thesis defenses required by universities. Their scientific practices can serve as a resource for mentorship. The publication activity of supervisors is crucial for young researchers, as it not only involves them in publication preparation but also indirectly serves as a model of a successful scientific career. Methods. A twostage analysis of open sources was conducted using the case of Ural Federal University. The first stage involved analyzing information from dissertation council conclusions about full-time doctoral students (n = 214), who defended their theses between 2020 and 2022, and their supervisors (n = 155). The second stage involved analyzing key scientometric indicators of the quality of the supervisors' publication profiles in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) bibliographic database. Results and Discussion. The results indicated that 24 % of the most academically productive supervisors (number of candidates ≥ 2) prepared and led to defenses almost half of the total number of doctoral students. A comparative correlation and regression analysis was conducted on the publication profiles of supervisors with high and moderate academic productivity. It was also found that highly productive supervisors involve their doctoral students in the process of preparing publications. The limitations of such an analysis, including those related to different fields of science, are discussed. Conclusion. The effectiveness of doctoral school research plays a significant role in doctoral studies. The bibliometric evaluation of supervisors' publications is interesting as it serves as a reliable indicator of the scientific career values transmitted to doctoral students. The proposed tools can be scaled up in other Russian higher education institutions and used to analyze and compare individual fields of science.
