Abstract

The article presents the study of the names of ergonyms which belong to the thematic group “Food Stores” in the city of Naberezhnye Chelny, Republic of Tatarstan. The study was conducted on the linguistic material of two synchronic snapshots of the city: in 2001 and 2023, which defines the novelty of the research. The subject of the study is the semantic word formation of ergonyms. The corpus of examples includes more than 430 names identified in both periods. The main method of the study is comparative analysis. The dominant principle was to study the designated ergonyms separately, independently, but from unified positions for further comparison. The results of the study showed that the semantic way of forming ergonyms is productive in both periods. The difference lies in the internal redistribution: in 2001, a significant share was accounted for by simple onymisation, in 2023, preference was given to metaphorical onymisation in the form of vocabulary in a figurative sense, reflecting the pragmatic orientation of the nominator. Over the 20-year period, there has been a significant change in the names of grocery stores, due to the development of a market economy in the region. The etymological analysis of ergonyms testifies to the centuries-old interaction of languages and cultures. The study of ergonyms, including those created on the basis of words of Tatar and Turkic origin, showed that the modern polylingualism of the Republic of Tatarstan began to be laid in ancient times.
