Abstract

The basic framework shaping anticommunism in Turkey in 1950s was the conditions of the Cold War. Anti - communism was the cornerstone of the Cold War ideology which also led to a significant increase in hatred of the Soviet Union. Fighting against communism during the single party period of Turkish Republic was carried out within the framework of protection of the state’s political and economic in- 67 dependence. During this period, not only did the state fight against communism but also fought against other ideologies( such as extreme right ) posing threat on its own policy and ideology. However, the biggest threat became communism and the Soviet Union which was identified with it due to the fact that we took place in the Western Block after the Cold War. It can be said that the state became closer to the thoughts and environments which it was against before and allied with them in struggling against communism. The fact that the state approached this kind of environments and these environments adopted the state against “red threat” in return for this is the result of the alliance. Despite softening of secularism and extreme right wing’s( such as Tijani tariqa) actions of anti-Ataturk and Republic in the early stages of DP, they were included in alliance formed around anti-communism ideology owing to both DP’s uncompromising approach against such actions and nationalists with conservative circles because of “approaching red threat”. The state and its institutions prepared the environment in the formation of this alliance. This led to a spreading of struggle of communism to large layers of society and an increase in sensitivity against communism while reducing opposition of the Republican regime. While benefiting from authorities of conservative and religious communities on traditionalist layers of public, they formed more organized and systematic new structures. Guide books spreading fear and anxiety, recommending methods of fighting against communism and propaganda pamphlets were published as well.
