Abstract

The present article continues the author's previous studies in the theory and research methodology of eponymy. In them, she has proceeded from a parametrical model for the description and analysis of eponymic semantics, whose three principle parameters are related to the underlying proper name, the derived eponym, and the motivational relationship between the first and second. This paper focuses on a special group of proper names from which some eponyms are formed: legendary names. These proper nouns are of a unique onomastic nature, as they occupy an intermediate position between realonyms, i. e. proper names denoting real-world entities, and mythonyms, denoting fictitious, mythical or fantastic entities. The author has employed a two-level approach to systematizing proper names underlying eponyms. At the first level, the main classification criterion is the general type of an underlying name's denotatum (such as real, fictional, or intermediate), and at the second level criterion deals with its individual rather than shared features (cf. M. Torchynskyi's denotative-nominative approach). Using this approach, we have distinguished further subtypes of proper names within the principle types, such as anthroponyms, theonyms, zoonyms, toponyms, etc. In doing this, we have avoided mixing the denotative-nominative criterion with that of proper name origin. Proceeding from the findings of her PhD research, the author has continued her indepth analysis of each legendary name that she found in lexicographic reference sources. In particular, she has distinguished such subtypes of legendary names as anthroponymic, toponymic, theonyms, and zoonymic ones. Legendary anthroponyms are further divided into those denoting saints and biblical characters, and those denoting semi-mythical figures. In that, she scrupulously discusses the denotatum of each proper name, as well as the relationship between the signifier and the signified.
