The approach in which the history of the Ukrainian language is presented as a history of defeats has already become traditional. Researchers focus on what factors (banning the language, its devaluation, physical extermination of the speakers) led to a decrease in the prestige of the language, to the absence of a cultural product in Ukrainian, to a low level of command of the state language and reluctance to communicate in it. O. Demska's new book is "a slightly different story" of the Ukrainian language. From this story the stereotype of the victim was removed, instead the focus was on what was done over the centuries to ensure that the Ukrainian language survived, asserted its rights and developed further.
