Abstract

Introduction. A market economy promotes the development of various forms of ownership and management. One of these forms is private farms, which are essential to the country's economy, as they are a structural element of Ukraine's agricultural sector and play an important role in supplying agricultural products to the domestic market, providing employment for farmers, and replenishing their sources of income. They remain a stabilizing link in the economy that compensates for the decline in agricultural production at certain agricultural enterprises, meets the food needs of the population, generates cash income for farmers and is their main source of survival. The social significance of private households is manifested in reducing unemployment, and creating opportunities for increasing their incomes, and social security. This social aspect of their activity is especially important in the context of economic development, when there is a significant reduction in jobs in agriculture. Therefore, it is in these conditions that the activity of private households becomes not an additional, but the main type and source of income, a real opportunity to ensure a decent standard of living for the peasant. Purpose. The purpose of the study is to substantiate theoretical provisions and scientific and practical recommendations for researching the role and prospects of further functioning of private peasant farms in ensuring the economic development of rural areas. Materials and methods. The research materials are: 1) regulatory and legal support for the regulation of private peasant farms; 2) works of domestic and foreign scientists who carry out their scientific and practical research on the economic development of private peasant farms in terms of creating a sufficient level of food security and saturation of the domestic market with food products. In the course of the study, the following scientific methods were used: theoretical generalization to characterize the essence of the concept of “private household” as a structural element of the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine; for a more substantive study, the parameters of the activity of private peasant farms and the share of agricultural production by the population in 2022 were analyzed using the economic and statistical method; the grouping method allowed to distribute rural households by the number of main types of farm animals and the area of land in their use; the method of logical generalization of the results allowed to formulate clear conclusions and provide constructive proposals. Results. The economic prerequisites for the formation of private households as business entities are considered. The main constraints to their development as a full-fledged component of the agricultural sector are highlighted. It is emphasized that the acute problems in private households are, on the one hand, hard manual labor on the land without the means of its mechanized cultivation and financial means to pay for its cultivation, and on the other hand, underemployment, poverty, and migration of the able-bodied population
