Abstract
A comprehensive analysis of the most widespread type of Steppe sanctuaries in the Scythian and Sarmatian times for 1000 years (VI century BC – IV century AD) – round, with ramparts and moats, without a roof covering – is presented. Such structures were common in the area from the Southern Urals and Ustyurt to the Dnieper. The main zones of their spread are the Lower Ural River region and Central Cis-Caucasus. Sometimes they were used by people of later cultures. These were the objects of local importance. Sanctuaries in sacred areas formed clusters; solitary objects are also known, they were not associated with necropolises. Sanctuaries with different interior design are considered, among which are those with a central pit for fire rituals. Altars, horse, sheep and bull sacrifices were important elements of many objects. In many cases, gifts were purposely damaged and broken, and sanctuaries also contained more ancient artifacts. Different types of rituals are assumed to have taken place in them , except for memorial ones. After the sanctuary was closed, it was often covered with earth or stones.
