Abstract
During pre-nationalization period and after independence, the banking sector remained in private hands Large industries who had their control in the management of the banks were utilizing major portion of financial resources of the banking system and as a result low priority was accorded to priority sectors. Government of India nationalized the banks to make them as an instrument of economic and social change and the mandate given to the banks was to expand their networks in rural areas and to give loans to priority sectors such as small scale industries, self-employed groups, agriculture and schemes involving women. As a result we can support a non-zero level of nonperforming assets which balances the risk vis-à-vis return appropriate to the Indian context. In this paper, we analysis the performance of all public and private sector banks in India with using statistical tools i.e. average and t-test.
