Abstract
The current view of regional politics as an activity, the objective of which is, among others, to lower the disparities in development of individual regions and to ensure their harmonious development, stresses and requires the necessity of cooperation among towns, municipalities, micro-regions and regions in development of a given area. Local initiative thus becomes more and more important and under certain conditions becomes a key factor in regional development, which is demonstrated by this contribution on the development of inter-municipal cooperation in selected European countries in connection with the change in number of municipalities in Europe after the Second World War
