INVESTIGATION OF THE PROSPECTIVE TURKISH TEACHERS’ READING HABIT ACCORDING TO SEVERAL VARIABLES

Abstract
Reading is one of the most effective and easiest method of learning. In developed countries reading rate is higher than undeveloped countries. This case is related with economic reasons and is also related with society's culture, habits and education system. In schools, acquiring the habit of reading to students belongs to teachers, who are they must be the most effective in this role. The purpose of this study is to determine if Turkish teachers’ and pre-service Turkish teachers’ attitudes towards reading habit show difference depending on various variables. The data were gathered from, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders studying total 142 students at the Department of Turkish Education in Atatürk Education Faculty at Marmara University in 2012-2013 the spring semester of the academic year. Research was carried out by scanning model based on the descriptive research method. Approaches of teacher candidates, which are expected to have the habit of reading books, on this issue searched by using descriptive methods. The analysis of obtained data prepared using by KOAİTO, which is developed by Gömleksiz (2004a) and means "A Study on Reading Habits Attitude Scale". The scale consist of 21 positive and 9 negative, total 30 items which are compose from six factor named as "Love", "habit", "should", "will", "impact" and "benefit". Research wants to be identified which factors are effective on reading books for girl and boy teacher candidates, and also wants to detect if the grade level is also effective on subject. As a result, in both respects it was remarked that there are significant differences.
