TRANSLATOR’S HABITUS AS A PRODUCTION OF PERSONAL HISTORY

Abstract
To be seen as an interdependent discipline and to take its place in social sciences, Translation Studies emphasized translation product as a research object which could be analyzed and explained academically. Systemic and target-oriented paradigm assessed target text in its socio-cultural context and analyzed translators’ decisions and the factors which affect these decisions methodologically. However, considering translator as an individual has gained more importance thanks to translation sociology. Daniel Simeoni, Moira Inghilleri, Jean-Marc Gouanvic, Andrew Chesterman and Reine Meylaerts are some of the profound theorists who have contributed much into translation sociology. However, French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's ideas are in the background of the studies of all these theorists and the other translation studies researchers in this field. The Bourdieusian terms “habitus”, “field”, “capital”, “game” ve “selfreflexivity” have an undeniable role in making translation sociology visible. The Bourdieusian term “habitus” has focused the personal history of translator and enabled researches to take translator as a subject in terms of her/his relations with society. Translator is considered as an agent who can maintain and strenghten the values of the field s/he belongs to or show a resistance to them and change the field. This article aims to show the contributions of Bourdieusian habitus, which illustrates the relation between translator's decisions and her/his personal and professional history, to Translation Studies and analyze the role of Kıymet Erzincan Kına in her translation of Alice in the Wonderland/Throught the Looking Glass with the help of “habitus”.
