Abstract

Conventional medical science is still lacking definite treatment for insomnia. It frequently prescribes sedative and hypnotic drugs as a therapy of insomnia. Ayurvedic classics give special emphasis on three important conductive factors for maintenance of life and health. This triune consists of Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya. The night occurring sleep is supporting, nourishing to mind and body. Improper Nidra affects health of these factors. Vitiation of Doshas is also equally responsible for imbalance of health .It means that health is dependent on Nidra as well as Doshas. Therefore this study is aimed at assessment of Doshas in perspective of Nidra to maintain health. Disorders of Nidra are not mentioned as a separate disease in Ayurveda. Literature regarding Tridosha Vriddhi - Kshaya Lakshanas and Nanatmaja Vikara has been reviewed. During description of Nidra Utpatti , Acharayas have mentioned that Sharir Dosha Kapha, Manasa Dosa Tama,Chetana Sthana Hridaya & Samdhnyavaha Srotas are responsible for it. The evident found that Vata, Pitta, Kapha , Raja, Hridaya and Samdhnyavaha Srotas play important role in Samprapti of disorders of Nidra. So the vitiation of these factors leads to disorders of Nidra which should be considered. It has been concluded that assessment of vitiation of Doshas is important in perspective of Nidra as pathological change in any property of Dosha is indicated by change in characteristics denoted to that property. This makes any physician to plan treatment in precise fashion along with proper diet and regimen according to Prakruti to nurture harmony of mind and body.
