Abstract

The subject of research in the paper is the problem of the soteriological content of the biblical book of Ecclesiastes. The aim is to analyze the structure of time in this text, which is still often perceived as cyclical. Author uses the evolutionary methodology that confirms the thesis about formation of the linear concept of time there (???? ? olám, the movement of the world to the God-Creator). It contraries to pagan ideas about the eternal and spontaneous recurrence of material existence. Author studies the question of a future life in the Old Testament and, consequently, of the function of Sheol, which is regarded as the prototype of the Catholic Purgatory too. The problem of Salvation is considered here like a release from the whirl of bodily existence. Author examines the question of the future Christian interpretation of the Savior as the next stage of the approval of the value of the individual and his conscience. That proves a unique role in Ecclesiasties in shaping on European personalism, which, unlike the "Socratic dialogue", still appeals to faith and hope. This should correct of popular stereotyped assertions of "skepticism of Ecclesiastes", which this "doubts" are the legacy of Babylonian thought and rethought polemic here. However, the method by emphasizing the value used the dialectic of overcoming doubt (and which was developed in the Talmud further) provokes of its misinterpretation. According to the author, doubtless that the preaching of Ecclesiastes is still has widely influence on the practical consciousness and behavior of the Europeans.
