Abstract
The field in which the repetition category is used in Ukrainian language is rather wide: folklore, fiction, spoken language, publicism, scientific and official styles. However nowadays there are no generally recognized approaches to the definition of this linguistic phenomenon because the criteria to the units of different nature such as onomatopoeia, reduplication, repetition, pleonasm, tautology are not formed. The reduplication exists on the margin of linguistic consciousness and is often identified with lexical repetition that explains the attention to this phenomenon. It can be full and variable. Reduplication is a way of wordformation that takes place among notional and functional parts of speech. The semantics of reduplications is concerned with quantitative characteristics of the object; adjustment of the meaning, alternative entity of the subject, act, circumstances; increasing the characteristic, meaning, affirmation, negation; transferring of specific action’s shades.
