Abstract
The article analyzes the development of Ukrainian to German translation in the postwar years in the German Democratic Republic. The analysis is based on the translations of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's novella "What is Written in the Book of Life", which were published in the anthologies of Ukrainian literature in 1953, 1961, and 1980 under the title "Aus dem Buche des Lebens". The comparative analysis reveals a gradual change in translation strategies, traits of ideological adaptation, and importance of intercultural competence of a translator, editor / publisher to render aт appropriate translation.
