Abstract

Literature of 1998-2013 has been reviewed; classifications of antibiotics have been described along with their advantages and disadvantages. ???Different types of antibiotics used in treatment of generalized periodontitis have been described. It has been established that in some cases of dystrophic-inflammatory diseases antibiotic therapy may be used. Antibiotics with bone tissue tropism or the ones with bacteriostatic or bacteriocydic effect to the periodontal pathogens are used in such case. Principles of their action, indications, side effects and contraindications to local and general treatment of periodontitis have been described. Warnings of different scientists on the use of antibiotics as well as schemes of antibacterial therapy of aggressive forms of periodontitis have been described. Conclusions have been drawn that the use of antibiotics in periodontology doesn’t have any solid scientific foundation, although the role of microbial factors in the etiology of periodontal diseases and some temporary effect on their periodontal pathogens has been proved. Thus, antibiotics should be prescribed strictly according to their indications, in compliance with their dosage and courses and only when the effect of certain antibiotics on the periodontal pathological microorganisms has been established.???
