Abstract
There were two villages named Meghri in the Zangazur uyezd of Ganja (Yelizavetpol) province historically: Great Migri//Great Meghri and Small Migri//Small Meghri. Afterwards these two villages were united. There was a settlement named Megri in Zangazur in XIX century. After the Soviet Power was establised in present Armenia one of the regions settled in the area of Western Azerbaijan was named Meghri, too. Region named Meghri was settled on September 9, 1930 as well as Meghri is a name of region centre. There is a word as mukir and mukur in the Turkish language using in the meaning of “exsiccant shallow river”, “impassable ravine without pass in its height”. For us Mighri being the initial and original form of geographical name Megri is phonetic version of mukir, mukur and the name of this settlement has been arisen from the “mighri” arisen from the basis of the word as mukir//mukur.
