Abstract
The research is particularly a discussion on the Indonesian novels written by Suparto Brata. The problem under discussion involves the issues of exoticism, language, identity, and resistance against the colonial powers in the perspective of post?colonialism. From the analysis, Suparto Brata’s novels obviously delineate that the colonial powers (Dutch and Japan) were so underestimating the natives as exotic, unintelligent folks, that such people was necessary to be taught for them to be more educated. Also, the colonial languages (Dutch and Japanese) were so highly perceived that the natives were to be enforced to speak those languages if they wanted their social status (identity) to be regarded equal. Accordingly, owing to such intelligences endowed from the colonial rulers, among others are the language skill and the knowledge on Western cultures, the native people then took the benefits by way of making resistance against the colonial powers under the agenda of full independence (freedom).
