Abstract

This research aims to understand how women who identify themselves as a part of a religious group/community are treated by other women in the group in terms of their ways of dressing in social life. In another words, our aim is to identify how other women react to the women who are dressed improperly according to the principles of the group. The data obtained by the focus group discussions are examined through apprehensive approach and discourse analysis. Our research shows that when the women who belong to a religious group dress improperly according to the principles of their group, they are exposed to some pressure by the other co-religionists in the group. The women who want to dress against the principles of the group do not follow their dressing desire mainly because they do not want to be a contradictory example for their mission whom they undertake and not to be excluded from the group. However, they prefer getting dressed as they want when they do not feel the social impact of their group and when they are surrounded by people who do not know their mission in social situations. As a result, it is possible to say that there is pressure and control mechanisms for dressing in social life among women in the religious groups.
