Abstract
The most important constituents of the metabolic syndrome are abdominal obesity, arterial hypertension, dyslipemia, the disturbance of glucose tolerance. The modern theories of etiopathogenesis of each of the mentioned pathologies are considered. It is shown in detail, that a single biochemical mechanism - insulinoresistence - forms the basis of the metabolic disturbances and illnesses, characteristic of the metabolic syndrome.
