Abstract
Asoka was conscious that his work of missionary will not be complete unless he did some work for the happiness of the animals world also. It has been seen that being a votary of Dhamma he had banned the killing of animals, planted herbs which were beneficial to both men and animal and in this way he not only preached but also practiced kindness to all living creatures for the propagation of his Dhamma. He had also sent missionary under his son mahendra and daughters Sanghamitra to Ceylon. It can be safely concluded that the life of Asoka was the life of a missionary who devoted his energy to the propagation of Dhamma which was supposed to bring heavenly bliss to the living creatures in this world and the next. He convened the third Buddhist council at Pataliputra under the presidentship of moggliputta Tissa. A number of Buddhist preaches were sent to neighbouring countries to propagate Buddhism. Asoka, thus, made Buddhism an international religion.
