Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a contribution in wire ropes life prediction and optimization of industrial applications. The final objective is to define the wire rope damage. We studied the damage of a strand extracted from a non-rotating cable 19x7. Avoiding costly fatigue tests, this method is based on tensile experiments. From the tensile test made on healthy strand then on a strand with a broken wire, we have established the static damage of the strand by a residual forces method. Then we defined a semi-empirical damage by the unified theory. A correction of the safety factor applied for the damage estimation by unified theory produced very conclusive results compared to damage curves as a function of the fraction of life. The critical fraction of life obtained for the strand is 5/7 (critical damage). Keywords: wire rope, strand, wire, damage, tensile, breaking strength, predictive maintenance.
