Abstract

The aim of the examination was to analyse the effects of creative drama on communication and relations skills of the children with special needs. Creative drama, one of the education methods needing trans disciplinary collaboration, makes a game - based environment for children rather than using direct teaching steps. The participators consist of 20 randomly chosen students from mentally disabled 152 students who could not have pre - school education registered in Düzce Counseling and Research Center’s MEBI S. 10 of these students make the test group while the other 10 make the inspection group. Prepared with the creative drama method, social skills education training programme for improving speaking and communication skills was applied on the experiment gro up. The 60 - hour - education program was carried out by nine experts a logopedist Ph.D. student, four special education teachers with creative drama certificate and also four pre - school teachers which makes nine experts in total. Activities except drama were held with the inspection group in a duration equivalent to the inspection group’s. Before, at the end of and three months after the experimental process, parents answered on the speaking and communication subdimensions in Social Skills Evaluation Scale f or the students. As the result of the Friedman test, it was indicated that there are remarkable differences among the medians like test group’s basic spea king skills, advanced spaking skills, starting relations skills and relations maintenance skills, pre - test, post - test and follow up test. Results show that creative drama is an effective method for improving basic speaking and relations skills of children with special needs. it was seen that there were differences among the children’s all language post - te sts in the test group and the research results are supporting all the evidences. It s thought that creative drama need to take more place in education programs for mentally disabled students, in programs for language and speaking improvement skills and th at family participation can be fruitful.
