Parents’ Perception on November 24th Teachers Day Gifts

Abstract

Celebrated on November 24 every year in our country, Teachers’ Day is celebrated with various activities in schools. A variety of gifts are given by student parents to teachers in Teachers’ Day as well as celebrations organized. These gifts can be received personally by student parents as well as they can be received by means of acting jointly with class’s guardian. The gift received to the teachers creates feelings in the student parents’ inner world such as happiness, excitement, embarrassment and to remember the teachers whatever the nature of gifts, even if the gift is cheap or expensive and is received personally or jointly. In this study, it is addressed that how the gifts received by student parents to be given to teachers are perceived by student parents. This study is carried out with 37 parents from 4 different schools. Three questions are asked to participant parents in interview form and they are requested to reply to these questions. In this study, the case study method, which is widely used in qualitative research, is used. Data are collected by the semi-structured interview method. According to this study, the great majority of parents remember a gift given with positive emotions like happiness and excitement. It is seen that the gifts given to teachers has very useful aspects such as reminding the teacher, making happy the teacher and developing the relationships. When parents consider themselves like a teacher with role reversal, they say that they would accept the gifts with a great appreciation, happiness and embarrassment feelings.
