Abstract
Ayurveda has given lot of emphasis to the preservation of health and prevention of diseases. It also deals with the environmental and social conditions. The word “Ayurveda” is formed by two words, i.e. ayu (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Ayurvedic medicine is also known as Indian system of medicine. It is generally practiced in India and is one of the oldest systems of medicine in the world. Its approach to health care is holistic. Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest medical sciences. It is originated in India about 5,000 years ago and remains one of the country’s official traditional health care systems. Three ancient text books known as the Brihatrayai (Great Trilogy) i.e. Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Astanga Hridaya were written in Sanskrit over 3,000 years ago and these are the main classics on Ayurvedic medicine. The two prime objects of Ayurveda are Swasthyashya Swasthya Rakshanam (to maintain the health of the healthy person) and Aturashya Vikara Prashamanancha (to cure the diseases of the ailing person).
