Abstract
This polemical article presents two extreme viewpoints which currently exist in Russian literary criticism and which set the barrier for the adequate study of Russian literature. While liberal progressivism a priori stands for the negative attitude to Eastern Orthodoxy as such, the uncritical projection of a coherent system of religious dogmas on literary texts sets bounds to the perception of rich Eastern Orthodox traditions. A way out of this deadlock is seen in the study of Russian literature.
