Abstract

Selim Sırrı was born on the 25 March 1874 at Yeni Şehir in Mora. Yusuf Bey who was from the Kesrik village of Harput and known as Uzun was his father. He pursued his education at military schools in İstanbul. He was attended as a squadron leader to Manastır. While he pursued his career at that mentioned area, he married Zeynep, the daughter of Selim Efendi who was one of the well known scribes of that area. Apart from the journal of Terbiye and Oyun, Selim Sırrı had authored and directed the journals such as Tedrisat and İdman. Among them, the İdman journal was known as the first comprehensive journal of the press of Turkish sports. The Terbiye and Oyun journal started to be broadcasted on 1 August 1327 (1911). It introduced itself with the title of “the journal serving the physical, psychological and intellectual education of youth”. The director and publisher of this journal was Selim Sırrı. It was given “the number ten in Orhan Bey commercial building at Babıali Street in İstanbul” as the address of the executive office As a sport journal, the Terbiye and Oyun due to its didactic feature addressed to the schools and physical education teachers. In order to subscribe to this journal as a condition, it was necessary to give 30 kurus fifteen times semiannually. The ones who were students would have subscribed annually for 20 kurus. Generally, in the journal the physical training and subject matters of sports had been published. Without using any pseudonym, Selim Sırrı wrote more than one article with his own name. The journal continued its broadcast life untill June 1923 at intervals.
